22nd MAY - BLACKOUT AND CANDLELIGHT

  • To show solidarity with the rest of India in showing disapproval of the methods of the present Government, the hostels of various colleges observed a blackout for 10 minutes at 8pm IST today.

  • Students and doctors from various colleges took out a candlelight march at 4pm from the CNMC campus. The march was a silent one with the protesters covering their mouths with adhesive tape.

  • The relay hunger strike at Calcutta National Medical College showed no signs of abatement. Many more students have joined the protest.

Hi there,

I'm writing from California. I appreciate your fight against injustice. My humble opinion / suggestion are :

a. Get in touch with the best lawyers and file PILs in HC / SC.
b. Sue the politicians for implementing policies that are dangerous, not in
in the national interest and affecting the opportunities of hard working professionals.
c. explore the possibilities of recalling the politicians constitutionally. I think the
constitution provides options to strip the politicians off their MP post.

I can help gather support from NRIs for the anti-Reservation protests.

You could could state the following points in the PIL :

1. Reservations are Regressive - affect the quality of professionals, the standards of
education and ultimately the overall society / nation.
2. Reservations are Unjust - they are causing injustice to a section of the society,
the hard working and sincere students.
3. Reservations are Discriminatory - it is not anybody's fault that they are born into
a particular caste or community. All seats / jobs should be open to anybody who
is sincere about his studies and works hard.
4.Reservations are Unpatriotic and Anti-National - they are stoking fires of caste
divisions. They are causing disunity in the society.
5. Reservations are Politicising Education - Politicians misuse this option for political
gains without giving a thought to the future of the society and nation
6.Reservations are Oppressive - they are leading to the education / economic
oppression of people in the general category. If Reservations are continued they
will severley affect the economic prospects of general category.
7.Reservations are anti-welfare - under the guise of uplifting one section of society
the politicians are suppressing the economic freedom and freedom to acquire
knowledge of the general category. They serve only a handful rich in the backward
classes.

Demand for - ROLL BACK ALL RESERVATIONS and find alternate ways to help backward classes.

Respected President,
Youth for Equality, WB

Thanks for giving the introduction of your group through web. Under present circumstances in India I would certainly like to appreciate your movement against the reservation for a particular community of our country. This system is definitely based on dirty politics started right after our independence when the then leaders decided the reservation based on social structure but not on financial status. The biggest problem of new India I believe was to fight against poverty and illiteracy not the social status. The social discrimination is the outcome of those two basic problems.
From my personal experience the reservation at this moment is giving huge privilege to a certain part of society who are definitely minority but also financially strong. Indian career is the fast es track road I have ever seen and there the minority people living in the dark are not getting any benefit out of this project.

Though we realized this fact after so many years we should keep one point in mind that the poverty and illiteracy is the basic problem of such a huge nation. and these two problems are mostly interrelated. I believe the reservation based on financial status and district of location can give more scientific and logical social development of our country.

wish you good luck with your movement
with my moral support

Dont give me this doctors decisions mean life and death... shit. I have seen Kargil, Kashmir and much more which will make your hair stand up on end.
Many among us sit and do nothing, most probably they dont even pay taxes honestly and then start all over this merit and we need to take india to the top and all this patriotic nonsense.
If you are really patriotic then accept that you and hundreds of your earlier generations did very little for this country and its people. That is why India is so backward, because you and others in the hypocritical middle class has only learnt one word in its entire life "I".
What are the stands you have taken in your life, any ethical, philosophical or conscientious stands. Even as simple as that if a policeman was troubling a rickshaw puller did you stand up on the side of the rickshaw wala??? ha ha ha for my even asking you this question...buzz off and start doing and stop gassing around!!!
Did anyone take a stand for the weak the defenceless, for your sister at home when your father gave it to her, against your neighbour if they were building illegally, against your faculty if they were being unfair, did you stand up when big factories pollute the air, when the government does not supply you clean drinking water, or when you had to pay for your education which should gave been free and a right???
Did you stand up when a ST/SC was called "habshi, junglee, shaddu" I do not think so. Did you spend sleepless nights agonizing about the street orphan below your window on winter nights.
lets not give purselves this Bhagat Singh and Chandershekhar Azad stuff- if the only time you can open your mouth is to talk for about and of yourself and your needs.
This country needs a bloody revolution and not one of you will have the guts to even actually read the letters written by Bhagat Singh, forget it.
And those of you who have chosen to be abusive to each others castes, you both deserve it _ Believe me- you both deserve it...
People with empty hearts and minds!

you would not klnow a revolution if it was staring in your face. Can you ever imagine Bhagat Singh or Bismil or Chandershekhar Azad standing by for such an opportunistic and parochial set of young people as you. We all know that if this reservations crap had not cropped up, NOT ONE of you would have ever even raised the issue of inadequate reservation implementation by the government.
Not ONE among you will opt to work among the rural poor.
Not one among you will stay back in India given a chance you get to go to the UK, Australia, Europe, Canada or USA.
Not one of you have every fought for a cause which involves others and not just your self.
Not one of you will be able to stand up for the poor or the underpriviledged when they are under attack by the police or even by upper castes.
